LUCKY STRIKE RERAIL

LUCKY STRIKE
RERAIL

OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW

An award-winning experiential campaign built around a series of eight-hour interactive train events, designed to immerse consumers in the Lucky Strike brand world.

THE CHALLENGE
THE CHALLENGE

With cigarette advertising and branding restrictions in place, the challenge was to create an alternative way to engage consumers and build brand presence — without traditional media, celebrity endorsement or overt branding.

The experience also needed to:

  • Compete with major end-of-year events
  • Remain secretive and exclusive
  • Deliver a unique experience for each audience to avoid repetition or spoilers

Previous train events had already generated strong word-of-mouth, with the exclusivity and secrecy leading to stories — and even perceived participation — beyond actual attendees.

THE IDEA
THE IDEA

The concept was to transform a train into a moving brand environment — where every element contributed to a layered, interactive experience.

Consumers were not just attendees.

They became participants inside a narrative-driven journey.

The train became a fully immersive, moving brand world.

From cryptic posters and coded entry systems to interactive missions and hidden clues, the experience unfolded progressively — rewarding curiosity and engagement.

The invitation strategy focused on trendsetters and their aspirational followers — amplifying the event’s cultural reach through word-of-mouth and social influence. By keeping access limited and controlled, the experience gained momentum through perception as much as participation.

Execution
Execution

Fourteen train carriages were stripped and reconfigured into a multi-sensory environment, including:

  • Themed dance floors and bars
  • Chill-out observation coaches
  • A games arcade and interactive zones
  • A tattoo parlour, massage area and hairdresser
  • A communication coach with satellite phones

The train was divided into distinct themed environments — including heritage, retro, sci-fi and urban culture — each with its own design language, music and atmosphere.

The train windows were boarded up to maintain secrecy, with destinations revealed only at the final moment.

At each destination, the journey extended into an outdoor experience with DJs, food and social interaction, before returning for the return-leg party.

Interaction System
(The Pods)
Interaction System
(The Pods)

At the core of the experience was a network of custom-built biometric “Pods”.

Using fingerprint recognition — well before widespread wireless connectivity — these pods:

  • Assigned personalised missions
  • Tracked individual participation
  • Directed users through different parts of the train
  • Encouraged exploration of the brand environment

The system created a dynamic, game-like layer over the physical experience, turning the event into an interactive journey rather than a passive environment.

Hidden Mechanics & Brand Language
Hidden Mechanics & Brand Language

Clues and answers were embedded throughout the experience:

  • Coasters revealed hidden messages when overlaid with entrance tickets
  • Posters introduced a custom “Lucky Strike Language” (Glyph)
  • Environmental graphics and objects formed part of the discovery system

This created a layered experience where interaction, design and storytelling worked together to deepen engagement.

Post-Event Engagement
Post-Event Engagement

The experience extended beyond the event itself.

Each participant received a personalised video — creating a “15 seconds of fame” moment and reinforcing their connection to the brand.

An event-specific website further extended the experience and sustained engagement after the event.
