HEROTEL

HEROTEL

OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW

A corporate identity and brand system developed for HeroTel — a telecommunications company built through the acquisition of independent WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers).

The project focused on creating a unified identity that could scale across multiple businesses while balancing brand consistency with stakeholder realities.

THE CHALLENGE
THE CHALLENGE

HeroTel was founded as a new venture by Alan Knott-Craig, following Mxit, with a strong emphasis on brand identity from the outset.

The initial brief was to create:
• A modern, distinctive identity rooted in the idea of “heroes”
• A visual language that could extend across communication, culture and environment

As the business grew through acquisition, the challenge evolved:
• Multiple independent WISPs with established identities
• Resistance from owners to abandon their brands
• The need for a unified presence without losing local equity
• A requirement for scalable, easy-to-apply brand systems

THE APPROACH
THE APPROACH

Rather than enforcing a full rebrand, the solution was to develop a hybrid identity system.

The approach focused on:
• Retaining recognisable elements of existing brands
• Standardising typography, colour and structure
• Creating visual consistency across all entities
• Designing templates that could be easily applied across marketing channels

This allowed each WISP to maintain a degree of identity — while becoming part of a larger, unified system.

THE Identity
THE Identity

The HeroTel master brand was built around a modern shield concept:
• A triangular shield form
• A stylised “H” with integrated “T” structure
• Wing elements derived from a split Wi-Fi signal
• A form that subtly resembled a knight’s helmet

The result was a symbol that balanced:
• strength
• connectivity
• forward movement

• Marketing collateral and promotional campaigns
• Internal culture and communication tools

One WISP (Wish Hotspots) fully embraced the system, allowing for deeper application across:
• Storefront branding
• Flyers and marketing material
• Ongoing campaign development
